The Search for Jean Bain
Report by Donna Bench and LaVonne VanOrden
August 6, 1988
Scenario A:
1. Name patterning
Archibald Livingston (son of James and Christine Campbell) md. 2 Dec 1832 (Airdrie) Helen Connor (daughter of Charles and Hellen Murie#)
- James Campbell
- Charles
- Helen
- Mother Helen died 1837
Archibald Livingston md. 8 Feb. 1840 (Old Monkland) Jean** Bain (?)
- Jane
- Isabella
- Archibald
- William
(All living in Airdrie in 1841 Census)
- or Mure or Murray
* * Jean and Jane used interchangeably
First marriage:
- 1st son named James after father's father and Cambell after mother's maiden name.
- 2nd son named Charles after mother's father,
- 1st daughter named Helen after mother's mother.
Second marriage:
- 1st daughter named Jane after mother (or mother's mother?)
- 2nd daughter names Iisabella after whom'?
- 1st son named Archibald after Father.
- 2nd son named William after whom? (Mother's father?)
CONCLUSIONS:
- Archibald and his two wives appeared to have followed the prevailing naming pattern.
- There is no Walter, thus casting doubt upon the theory that Jean's parents were Walter Bain and Jean Lithgow.
- Theoretically, Jean's father probably was William. Mother could have been Jean or Jane or Jane could have been named after her'mother.
II. Possible identity of 'Widow Jane Bain'
- 1851 Census of Airdrie: No. 45 Graham St.
Jane Bain, a. 66, Head, Widow, Housekeeper, deaf, b. Falkirk, Stirling 2 boarders
- Birth of Jiean Bain 21 April 1816 in Gorbals (section of Glasgow 8 mi from Airdrie) to William Bain and Jean Forrester
- Marriage of William Bain and Jean Forrester 1 Jun 1813 in Gorbais
- Birth of Jean Forrester 24 Apr 1783 in Falkirk, Stirling to Richard Forrester and Elizabeth (right birthdate to be 66 in 1851)
- Death of William Bain 27 Feb 1826, a. 61, in Gorbals
- Can find no other children born to this couple
CONCLUSIONS:
- Jean Forrester could be the widow living in Airdrie in 1851. She could have moved there with daughter Jean after the death of her husband in 1826, putting daughter Jean in Airdrie where she could have met and married Archibald Livingston in 1840.
- Since Jean Bain and Archibald Livingston were living in Airdrie until their deaths in 1849, it seems logical that Jean's widowed mother would also be living in Airdrie.
Scenario B:
1841 Census of Airdrie:
- William Bain a.58 Sailor not born in Lanark
- Jane Bain a. 55 not born in Lanark probably born in England
- John a. 18 Moulder ”
- Collin a. 1 6 Moulder "
CONCLUSIONS:
- "Our Jean" who was declared a.20 in the same census living with Archibald in Airdrie could have been their daughter.
- William and Jane have the "right names" for the name patterning.
- This Jane couldn't have been "Widow Jane" of 1851 even though she is the right age because she was not born in Falkirk.
Scenario C:
1. Professional genealogists hired by the Livingston family 10 years ago concluded that Jean Bain's parents were Walter Bain and Jean Lithgow, although they could not prove it. They also said they could not find other possibilities (such as the ones listed above).
Walter Bain md. 21 Jul 1805 (Falkirk) Jean Lithqow (John L. and Mary Robertson)
Mary (15 Apr 1806)
John (17 Nov 1808)
Walter (6 May 1810) Isobel (6 Nov 1812) Thomas (10 Mar 1815)
Margaret (19 Aug 1817) Jean (14 Mar 1820)
2. Birth of a Jean Lithgow , 6 Feb 1782, in Falkirk to John Lithgow and Mary Robertson. (Would have been 22 in 1805)
3. Birth of Walter Bain: 1) 28 Nov 1788, in Falkirk, to John Bain and Isobel Callender (Would have been 17 in 1805) 2) 9 Feb 1772, in Falkirk, to John Bain and Grissel (Would have been 32 in 1805) 4. 1841 Census: A John Bain, a. 30, Vinteur, not born in Airdrie, was living in Drumgelloch, a section of Airdrie, with his wife Agnes McHutchison and two children: Janet, a. 6 who was not born in Airdrie; James, 4, who was born in Airdrie. (2 other children were later born to this family: John,1842 and Helen, 1846.) Could this have been the son of Walter and Jean who was born in 1808 (age rounded up to 30)? Names of children probably match names of parents of the mother. 5. 1851 Census: A William Lithgow, a. 39, spirit merchant, and wife Jane living in Airdrie close to Widow Bain (no. 13 Graham St) with 4 children (8, 6, 4, 4 mos.) and a servant. Could this be a nephew of Jean Lithgow Bain? 6. Falkirk Death Records show death dates for a Mary(1828); an Isobel (1822), a Thomas (1820), "Walter Bain's child" (1820)could have been Margaret a. 3. 7. Falkirk Marriage Records show marriages for Mary (1821); a Mary to Alexander Gray (1825); a Thomas to Agnes Liddell (1845); a Thomas to Mary Corvil (1837); and a Margaret to Thomas Smith, sailor (1831). CONCLUSIONS: 1. Why isn't there a Walter among Archibald and Jean's children? Could it be that there was a rift between the Bains and the Livingstons since at their deaths, the children were cared for by Granny Livingston and no temple work was ever done for Jean's side of the family although they did the proxy work for the Livingston side. The children of Archibald and Jean apparently didn't even know their Mother's maiden name. (see record of temple sealing of Isabella and Samuel Ruggles Aiken). If this occurred during Jean's lifetime, especially if it occurred just before the birth of William, that could account for there being no Walter in her family but would allow for there being an Isobel. 2. Jean Lithgow's parents were Mary and John and her first two children were Mary and John. The fourth child is Isobel which is an evidence for Walter being the son of John and Isobel Callender. It would also account for the Isabella in Archibald and Jean's family. 3. Jean, the youngest of the family, could have gone to Airdrie as a young girl as a nanny to John Bain who was living in Airdrie from 1836 who could have been her older brother. This would have put her in a position to meet and marry Archibald Livingston. Or, if William Lithgow was a nephew of Jean Lithgow Bain and if she was the mother of our Jean Bain, Jean could have gone to Airdrie as a nanny to his family, her cousin. 4. Because there are death dates as well as marriage dates for names of most of the children in this family it isn't possible to tell who is who or which is which. However, we have not found a death date for Jean, unless she is the one referred to as "Walter Bain's child" as having died in May 1820. It is more likely this would have been Margaret as Jean would only have been 2 months old and would likely have been referred to as an infant. This would lend support to the notion that this is “our Jean” marrried Archibald in 1840 and died in 1849. SCENARIO C: WALTER BAIN AND JEAN LITHGOW

2. The accompanying color coded pedigree chart reconstructs a possible scenario. Each fact is one color: for instance:
- yellow--a William Bain was born to Andrew Bain and Isabel Craig on 13 Sept. 1789 in Rutherglen, Lanark.
- green--a William Bain was married to a Jean Forrester on 1 Jun 1813 in Gorbals, Lanark.

- Whether these William Bains were one and the same we don't know, but they could have been.
- pink--a Jean Forrester was born to Richard Forrester and Elizabeth on 24 Apr. 1783 in Falkirk, Sterling.
- lavendar--A Jean Forrester, widow, a. 66, was living in Airdrie one block from Archibald and Jean's home in the 1851 census.
- Whether these Jean Forresters were one and same we don't know, but they could have been.
- orange--Our Jean Bain was married to Archibald Livingston in 1841 in Old Monkland, Lanark and died in Airdrie in 1849.
- Whether she is the same as the.Jean Bain (blue) we don't know, but she could have been.
