Category:Old Parish Register

From LFAwiki

This category includes documents containing or pertaining to the Old Parish Records of Scotland. According to ScotlandsPeople, "The Old Parish Registers (OPRs) comprise the records of births & baptisms, banns & marriages and deaths & burials kept by individual parishes of the Established Church (Church of Scotland) before the introduction of civil registration in 1855."[1]

From the mid 1500’s up until 1854 (about the time Christina immigrated to Utah with her two youngest children and the grandchildren by her son Archibald then in her care) vital records in Scotland were kept by the clergy (or parish clerk) in parish registers. Of principal interest to the descendants of Archibald Livingston are the Dalgetty Parish registers. Unfortunately, a portion of those records were lost to fire. Three surviving volumes remain in the Scottish Archives, numbered by them 422/1, 422/2, and 422/3 respectively. Each volume is found divided into three general sections: one addressing births, a second addressing marriages, and a third addressing deaths. The information timeframe for each register is as follows: Births Marriages Deaths 422/1 1644-1659 1644-1707 1697-1709 422/1 1717-1819 1709-1819 1710-1785 422/3 1820-1854 1820-1854 1833-1854 Gratefully, all of Scotland’s surviving old parish registers have been indexed and are available via the internet or family history libraries. Even so, the need to review and reference an image of the actual document should not be underestimated. Valuable information is sometimes available that does not otherwise appear in the data collected by the index. Neither are the indexes themselves devoid of the occasional error. In addition, sometimes something as simple as the entry’s position relative to other entries or a change in the handwriting yields valuable insights.

A review of the registers reveals the following gaps exist within the data: • Births: There are no entries from May 1650 to March 1717. The old parochial register for births includes one page, found after the record for 16 December 1778, headed “Seceders”, containing a few birth entries extending from 1777 to 1783. • Marriages: There are no entries from 1662 to 1698, from which date proclamation fee transactions are entered in the ledger until October 1717. There is one entry for 1726. No entries from July 1794 through May 1797 and from July 1804 to May 1811. There are, however, entries relating to irregular marriages, dated from 1741 to 1813, a number of which are applicable to the period blank in the regular record. • Deaths: Register entries for some mortcloth rentals are listed until June 1717, then deaths to the end of record. There are no entries from March 1748 to March 1750. After November 1785 there are only nine entries, one for 1817, and eight for a period extending from 1833 to1852.

In addition gaining an appreciation of the phrasing employed in the registers and learning how to read the cursive letter forms and abbreviations employed at the time, a clear understanding of what is and what isn’t recorded in the registers should be obtained. • Births: Most of the “birth” records are actually baptismal (christening) records and record only the baptismal date. On occasion, the actual birth date is added, most occurring within a few days or weeks previous to the baptism. Less frequently, the place of birth is also listed. It was common to record the names of both the father and the mother. Often, the names of a couple of witnesses were listed. • Marriages: The majority of “marriage” records is actually a record of a financial transaction; fees being paid by couples making a “proclamation of bannes”. They are, therefore, best associated with the date of a formal announcement to marry rather than the actual date of marriage. Scotland recognized two forms of marriage during this time: regular and irregular. Regular marriages may or may not have been conducted in the church, but were nonetheless performed by a member of the clergy. The process that led up to a marriage in Scotland was well-defined. First, for three consecutive weeks, an announcement was made to the congregation on Sunday announcing the couples intention to marry. If there were no objections (those objections normally be based on someone’s knowledge of the bride or the groom already being married to someone else or a concern that the couple were too closely related) the marriage would be allowed to proceed. If either the bride or the groom lived in a different parish, the process would be duplicated there. Irregular marriages were more of a simple public announcement made by the couple of their marriage. They did not involve the church, and therefore were not recorded. However, it appears that irregular marriages were sometimes “converted” to regular marriages. A fee was paid and that action and financial transaction were then recorded by the church. • Deaths: A record of death is far less common than a birth or a marriage. When they exist, like proclamations, the record of the event is often preserved as a financial transaction. And, like a baptism or a proclamation, often reflect the date of a funeral service rather than the actual date of death. It was customary during this time to rent a “mortcloth” from the church to cover the casket during the funeral service. Parishes sometimes had several mortcloths of varying quality to rent, the finest being the most expensive. Even with a less expensive option, it seems that a mortcloth was not always affordable and in such cases a death would not likely have been recorded. To make matters worse, not everyone was buried in a churchyard nor were graves always accompanied by a marker of some sort.

An exhaustive search of the Dalgetty Parish registers was conducted. In addition, records of the neighboring parishes of Dunfermline, Inverkeithing, Aberdour, Auchtertool, and Beath were reviewed. The following entries were found to be significant and are presented as written with additional notes in parenthesis:
