After only a cursory review of the source data it becomes readily apparent the spelling was not standardized until very recently. This is especially true with names. Indeed, names continue to be spelled in a variety of ways.

“Muir” is another surname commonly found in our family. It is found spelled Muir, Moor, Moore, Muire, Muirie, or Murray.
In addition to the spelling conventions are the variants to the names themselves. Whoever it was that wrote down the name, they simply wrote it as they heard it, Scottish brough and all. At other times, they may be written in an abbreviated form or just simply as a typographical error.
