Obituary
Priscilla Livingston Evans, 75, a prominent Salt Lake civic and church worker, died Monday at the 12th of August 1957 at 7:45 p.m. in a Salt Lake hospital following an illness. A life-long civic worker, Mrs. Evans was America’s first Grey Lady. She gained this distinction during World War I while working at Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. with her husband, the late Frank Evans. Mr. Evans was a former financial secretary to the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day- Saints, and a nationally prominent attorney. While at Walter Reed Hospital, Mrs. Evans supervised the activities of 60 women volunteer workers in the first Convelescent House established by the Red Cross.
In 1922, she headed the Sixth Annual Red Cross Roll Call in Salt Lake County. She was the first woman ever to act as chairman. She also was chairman of the Salt Lake County Chapter of the American Red Cross for several years, beginning in 1929. While in the capacity of Salt Lake Chapter chairman, Mrs. Evans was elected chairman of the 1930 National Convention of the Red Cross. She was the first woman to receive this honor in America. In addition, Mrs. Evans served as treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Neighborhood House and as a member of the Budget committee and the board of directors of the Community Chest.
An active LDS churchwoman, Mrs. Evans served seven years on the General Board of the Relief Society from 1941 to 1948. She also served as “Mission Mother” in the Eastern States Mission from 1937-1941 when her husband presided over the mission. She served on several YWMIA boards and held many other teaching and administrative positions in the auxiliary organizations of the church.
One of the first women attorneys to be admitted to the Utah State Bar, Mrs. Evans was the first president of “Barrister’s Wives" the bar’s auxiliary which she named. She was admitted to the bar in 1025. Mrs. Evans assisted her husband in the writing and publication of a legal treatise on “The Law of Agricultural Cooperative Marketing,” which was published in 1937.
She was corresponding secretary and a member of the executive committee of the National Council of Women of the United States, and was a delegate to the International Council of Women held in Philadelphia in September, 1947.
Socially prominent, Mrs. Evans was a member of the Friendship Circle, Cleophan, The Ensign Club, Barrister's Wives, and the Emeritus Club for the Relief Society General Board.
Mrs. Evans was born in Salt Lake City, Oct 18, 1881, a daughter of Charles and Ellen Harrocks Livingston. She was married to Frank Evans on Dec 31, 1902. Mrs. Evans was educated in Salt Lake City public Schools, the Salt Lake City High School, the Salt Lake Business College, Northwestern University of Chicago, IL and the University of Utah.
Surviving Mrs. Evans are a sister, Mrs. John A. (Grace) Ovard, Salt Lake City, and a brother, Clarence Livingston, Elko, NV. Funeral Services will be conducted Thursday at 12:15 p.m. in the 18th Ward chapel, 2nd Ave and A St., Bishop Earl Maw officiating, Friends may call at 260 E. So. Temple Wednesday evening and Thursday prior to services. Interment will be in the Coalville City Cemetery.
